I had been chatting with Allie on an off for a while on Facebook when she told me she was writing a book about her adventures in a camper van. I mentioned to her that it would be great to get hold of a copy to review here on the blog so as soon as the book was published she was kind enough to send me a copy.

The book is a collection of stories from various trips in to Europe in her camper van. You can probably tell from the name that adventure is not Allie’s middle name. It is therefore unfortunate for her (although interesting for us) that not all the trips she set out on went to plan and many resulted in some extremely humorous anecdotes and tales.

The best thing about the book is the ‘realistic’ insight you get of the epic holidays that Allie and her husband, Harry, embarked upon. There are too many TV shows where the stars set out upon long and ‘problematic’ road trips that ‘unexpectedly’ go wrong to humorous effect. In fact, I used to be a huge fan of Top Gear but lately the challenges they undertake seem to be extremely scripted and unrealistic.

Book Review: Uneasy Rider - Confessions of a Reluctant Traveller by Allie Sommerville

That’s not to be said for this book, however, as every escapade our unwilling traveller stumbles through is thrillingly realistic. As Allie describes the people she encounters and the problems she had, I couldn’t help but relate them to certain incidents that I have experienced in my time as a camper owner. Whether it is the fun that can be enjoyed from watching fellow campers set up their pitch or the embarrassment felt when other campers watch you trying to set up your own, every part of the book made me feel nostalgic about the times I had spent in my beloved van and also got me wishing the summer was here so I could go and have some more adventures (although as I write this I am ashamedly vanless!!).

My favourite chapter of the book has to be a trip that Allie has wanted to do for years, staying in a Parador in Arcos de la Frontera in Southern Spain. Now I am sure all us VW enthusiasts will empathise with the fact the Harry had just completed a full respray of his camper, and now Allie was ‘forcing’ him to take it up the narrow streets of Arcos, a journey resulting in being blocked by a low archway, some tight squeezes, arguments and not to mention the worry of poor Harry’s gleaming new paintwork!

As I sat and read this chapter I can just hear the same arguments occurring between my parents on outings in their motor home and it even reminds me of certain circumstances in our own VW Van which have caused a similar atmosphere and tension!

This book is not intended to be a guide to traveling in a camper van. Instead, it is a series of heart warming tales which every camper and / or van owner will be able to relate to. I thoroughly recommend it to accompany you on your next camper van trip.

To the britsh superbike round at oulton park in Lincolnshire we had everything well and truly packed in ready for our first adventure in our camper. The camper had only recently been finish, well when I say finished I mean just capable of housing us for a long weekend most of the significant deatils had still to be done but at least we’d got the pop-top on. Anyway the wife and I set off on Friday just after work, sligthly worried that I might be one of those campers at the side of the road we decided to take it steady. To cut a long story short the most interesting part of our journey was when we were crossing the Humber Bridge, there was I arm hanging out the window on a lovely summers evening. However the only problem was that once we got into the middle of the bridge we got a cross wind coming in the van and all of a sudden the pop-top lifted up. Now being in the middle of a bridge like that you can’t stop so after a bit of quick thinking I managed to persuade the wife to get in the back and pull it back down, only we gave a bulkhead not a walk-through. Howver after throwing herself into the back she managed to grab hold, but still coundn’t pull it down, it wasn’t until I had virtually stopped that it came down. She then managed to hold it down until we reached the other side, where I promptly got shouted at. Great start to the weekend.

That trip across the Humber Bridge reminds me of a similar event in our 71 Camper travelling across America, the wind was so strong in OK the pop top lifted like yours - we ended up bungy cording the pop top handle to a rucksack to keep it closed in high winds. We bought new pop top seals when we got home..

Rick and Brittany - what wonderful stories!

We just completed 10,000 miles over almost 7 months. Carole flew from Boston all across the USA to Portland, Oregon to collect me after placing the winning bid on Ebay. I’m a 1971 Westy. We have now travelled through 11 states together.
Funniest moment: when we almost won the SLOW Drag Race at a VW contest in Orange County, California. Winning means you have to be last to cross the finish line and we were ahead (i.e behind) when we stalled! You can laugh at our video on our you tube channel, which you can find on our Facebook page … http://bit.ly/cna3yP. Hope to see you there!

Driving up the A1 on Boxing day, the roads were filthy and the windscreen had to be washed frequently. Suddenly the water stopped squirting. ‘It’s okay’, said my husband, ‘the pressure has just dropped in the water bottle. Get the bike pump and attached it down there (by his left foot) and pump the pressure back up.’ So there we were, him driving and me pumping up the pressure in Ermintrude with a foot pump! Got to be the most hilarious sight if anyone had passed us in a lorry and looked in. The joys of driving a van!
