I had been chatting with Allie on an off for a while on Facebook when she told me she was writing a book about her adventures in a camper van. I mentioned to her that it would be great to get hold of a copy to review here on the blog so as soon as the book was published she was kind enough to send me a copy.
The book is a collection of stories from various trips in to Europe in her camper van. You can probably tell from the name that adventure is not Allie’s middle name. It is therefore unfortunate for her (although interesting for us) that not all the trips she set out on went to plan and many resulted in some extremely humorous anecdotes and tales.
The best thing about the book is the ‘realistic’ insight you get of the epic holidays that Allie and her husband, Harry, embarked upon. There are too many TV shows where the stars set out upon long and ‘problematic’ road trips that ‘unexpectedly’ go wrong to humorous effect. In fact, I used to be a huge fan of Top Gear but lately the challenges they undertake seem to be extremely scripted and unrealistic.
That’s not to be said for this book, however, as every escapade our unwilling traveller stumbles through is thrillingly realistic. As Allie describes the people she encounters and the problems she had, I couldn’t help but relate them to certain incidents that I have experienced in my time as a camper owner. Whether it is the fun that can be enjoyed from watching fellow campers set up their pitch or the embarrassment felt when other campers watch you trying to set up your own, every part of the book made me feel nostalgic about the times I had spent in my beloved van and also got me wishing the summer was here so I could go and have some more adventures (although as I write this I am ashamedly vanless!!).
My favourite chapter of the book has to be a trip that Allie has wanted to do for years, staying in a Parador in Arcos de la Frontera in Southern Spain. Now I am sure all us VW enthusiasts will empathise with the fact the Harry had just completed a full respray of his camper, and now Allie was ‘forcing’ him to take it up the narrow streets of Arcos, a journey resulting in being blocked by a low archway, some tight squeezes, arguments and not to mention the worry of poor Harry’s gleaming new paintwork!
As I sat and read this chapter I can just hear the same arguments occurring between my parents on outings in their motor home and it even reminds me of certain circumstances in our own VW Van which have caused a similar atmosphere and tension!
This book is not intended to be a guide to traveling in a camper van. Instead, it is a series of heart warming tales which every camper and / or van owner will be able to relate to. I thoroughly recommend it to accompany you on your next camper van trip.
