Simon Thompson shares with us his trip to Millau in France in his stunning 1967 Split Screen VW Campervan.
Four months hard graft, working on a new interior, followed by 10 nights, 2021 mile round trip camping in France, which included an un-missable visit to the magnificent Viaduc de Millau…
This isn’t a story about how I, Simon Thompson (serious petrol head), came to own my precious 67′ split screen camper back in 95’, nor is it a story about the endless hours/years spent transforming the body and chassis into something solid that I’m proud of today. It’s a story about planning a summer camping holiday abroad in early 2008 with my wife and being blasé about the fact that I would finish the interior in time for the BIG trip. All this when the interior didn’t exist, as the interior was pulled out before its spray job and complete re-build back in August 2003 and since then was never looked at again!

*** For a Chance to WIN a FREE copy of ‘Uneasy Rider - Confessions of a Reluctant Traveller’ by Allie Sommerville, please scroll to the bottom of this article ***
I had been chatting with Allie on an off for a while on Facebook when she told me she was writing a book about her adventures in a camper van. I mentioned to her that it would be great to get hold of a copy to review here on the blog so as soon as the book was published she was kind enough to send me a copy.
The book is a collection of stories from various trips in to Europe in her camper van. You can probably tell from the name that adventure is not Allie’s middle name. It is therefore unfortunate for her (although interesting for us) that not all the trips she set out on went to plan and many resulted in some extremely humorous anecdotes and tales. (more…)

In Part 1 of ‘Our 5500 Mile Trip across Australia in a Camper Van’ we told of our journey from Adelaide to Melbourne in a Camper Van. In Part 2 we travelled from Melbourne to Sydney and we now continue our travels from Sydney right up to Cairns.
We left of where we said goodbye to my Mum, Dad and brother who had flown out to Sydney to see us. We got back in the van and headed north up the coast passed Newcastle to Port Macquarie. We were so keen to make up some ground as we were well behind our schedule. So keen was I in fact that I completely ignored a Police Officer in the middle of the road waving me in to do a random breathalyser test. I only realised I had done this when I saw him in my rear view mirror with his sirens on yelling furiously at me to ‘pull over!’. (more…)

In his last VW blog post, Ian told us of his 18,000 kilometer trip around Australia in his 1975 Volkswagen Kombi Camper Van. In this follow up blog post, he tells us of the long process he went through to get his Bay Window VW Kombi (also known as Ethel) shipped from Australia back to the UK:
If you are considering shipping a VW Kombi - or any other vehicle - from Australia to the UK, and if you haven’t done anything like it before, be prepared to make lots of notes! And be prepared to get confused.
Note: This is a bit detail heavy. I have tried to make a note of all the strife I went through, so unless you are planning to do something similar, you might find this section a bit to detailed and generally nerdy. Oooh look! Pretty pictures! OK, that’s the visual people filtered out. Nerds, read on.

So Part 1 of Our 5500 Mile Trip across Australia in a Camper Van Left off with us taking a visit to Ramsey Street which was fun. After this we headed for Frankston where we stayed in a Big 4 Park for 2 nights. We spent a day on the beach (where I burnt quite badly watching some skim boarders) and then made off to cover some ground.
After a quick trip down the Mornington Peninsula, our next point of call was Phillip Island, a small island a few hours outside of Melbourne which is accessible by bridge. We drove the length of the Island right up to Cowes where we had a quick look around. By now, the sun burn was taking it’s toll and due to a mini heat wave in Victoria we decided that a night in the van would be a bit too much.

This weeks guest blog post comes from Ian who tells of his 18,000 kilometer trip around Australia in his 1975 Volkswagen Kombi Camper Van:
We were on the road in Australia in our Kombi from January 2004 until late August the same year. There were so many places we visited that it would be folly to write about all these places here, especially as we’ve already done just that in another web site. Suffice it to say that the old girl took us all down the east coast, through the capital, Canberra, down to Melbourne and over to Tasmania before making the final long (2,500km, 5-day) push across the Nullarbor Plain (and did us proud).
