Regular readers will know that I have been in the process of getting my recently purchased Volkswagen Transporter T5 converted in to a camper van.
Well last week I picked up my completed T5 Camper Van from Torbay Camper Conversions in Torquay and I have to say, I am chuffed to bits with it.
As I have previously mentioned, we have gone for ‘apple inspired’ white gloss look with black and grey leather seats which I think match the exterior of the van really well.
The conversion includes a sink, twin hob, grill, top loading fridge, power management unit, a RIB Altair 3/4 bed system, safe, 3 x spot reading lights on stalks, 2 x rotating strip lights, swiveling leather captains seats and a shower head unit at the rear (for cleaning the dog and the wetsuits etc). As VW Camper Van Owners / Enthusiasts I am sure that, like me, you have all been told by people outside of the scene (we shall call them ‘normies’) that you are mad for putting in all the time and effort (and not to mention the money) into, what they deem to be, an ‘old banger’. They simply cannot grasp the fun and enjoyment that can be gained from owning an old VW Bus. Similarly, I am sure you have all been told by these ‘normies’ that you could save a lot of money by hiring an old VW Van a couple of times a year. That way you can have all the fun and enjoyment without the bills that seem to destroy your bank balance in a few seconds flat!
Well someone recently imparted this wisdom to me and, as we are still currently without a van, I thought this might not be a bad idea. (more…)

I know I have mentioned this before, but as the weather starts to warm up I am really missing my van! I had planned to put the funds which we received from selling our T25 straight in to our next van project. However, I unfortunately had an attack of the ’sensibles’ as we needed to replace my struggling second car, a 1996 Toyota Starlet.
With the scrapage deal coming to an end we decided that we needed a reliable, comfortable car and that it made more sense (at the time) to buy a new car first and then replace the van later on. So we took our little Toyota down to be scrapped and in return, got a whopping £2000 off a brand new Mini! And I have to say, I am very impressed with the Mini, it’s small, fun and reliable. OK, I know it’s no Vintage VW but it does the job for getting to meetings and will take us where we need to go with no hassle (as boring as that sounds!). (more…)

I recently got chatting to a VW Van enthusiast I met on Facebook called Martha. She started telling me about an amazing project she and her friends were working on. The project was simply to build the world’s largest VW Van.
The idea was conceived after returning from Burning Man 2008, an event that brings together artists, hippies, and cool people of all backgrounds from around the world to celebrate life. Martha explains, ‘Each year artists create “mutant” vehicles that can be driven during the annual Burning Man event. Kirk Strawn, Rob Larson and their families attended Burning Man in 2008 and witnessed first hand the unbelievable creativity unleashed by the mutant vehicle artists and wondered what they could build to take to the event in 2009′.

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a long weekend washing and waxing our VW Type 25 Camper Van. Whilst doing this, I was shocked (and annoyed) to see the first stages of bubbling on the paint work. Regular readers will know that just over 12 months ago I had my van stripped down and re-sprayed in an attempt to save it from the rust that was forming in the usual places (seams / lower offside panel / etc).
Now, just over a year on, it seems I will have to book the van back in to have some spots touched up within the next couple of months!
This got me thinking, is it possible to have a hassle free VW camper van? One that has the iconic style of a VW without the constant battle of trying to keep it looking nice? One that simply looks nice all the time? (more…)

Following on from my blog post back in December, I had another exciting moment in WH Smiths the other day. I had received an email from another VW Camper Van Owner (’68 Devon) congratulating me for my van being featured in this months copy of VW Camper and Bus.
It was at that point that I remembered that I had sent in some photos a few weeks earlier thinking (or hoping) that they might be of interest.
So I jumped in the car (which was blocking the VW on the drive and is much easier to park in town) and headed off for WH Smiths. I rushed in a grabbed a copy and ripped open the sealed bag and headed straight for the Readers Rides section.

In his last VW blog post, Ian told us of his 18,000 kilometer trip around Australia in his 1975 Volkswagen Kombi Camper Van. In this follow up blog post, he tells us of the long process he went through to get his Bay Window VW Kombi (also known as Ethel) shipped from Australia back to the UK:
If you are considering shipping a VW Kombi - or any other vehicle - from Australia to the UK, and if you haven’t done anything like it before, be prepared to make lots of notes! And be prepared to get confused.
Note: This is a bit detail heavy. I have tried to make a note of all the strife I went through, so unless you are planning to do something similar, you might find this section a bit to detailed and generally nerdy. Oooh look! Pretty pictures! OK, that’s the visual people filtered out. Nerds, read on.

As Designers, we read a lot of graphic design and web design magazines. Today, whilst killing some time in WHSmiths, I picked up a copy of Web Designer Magazine (a very good magazine that I normally read) and noticed there was an feature on blogs.
As we are involved in the running of two blogs (this one and our graphic design blog) I thought I would have a quick look at these whilst in Smiths and was amazed and surprised to see that vwcampervanblog.com was featured in the top 50 Inspirational blogs.

This time 5 years ago, we had just started a massive 5 month round the world trip which saw us leave the UK, Fly to Singapore, then on to Australia, Hawaii, Mainland USA and then home. It really was the trip of a lifetime. In this blog post I thought I would write about the middle part of that amazing journey we led me to becoming a massive VW Camper Van fan.
We had just spent 3 weeks in WA (Western Australia) travelling around Perth and down to Bunbury and Busselton to see an old school friend of mine who is lucky enough to live there now. We then spent a week seeing Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayres Rock) before flying down to Adelaide where we had intended to drive from Adelaide right up to Cairns following the coastline.
