Unfortunately we weren’t able to make it to VolksWorld this year. Thankfully Andy at Norfolk VW Camper Hire was able to go and he gives us a run down of the show and his journey.
This year is the first year I’ve camped at VolksWorld. Poppy was packed up early on Friday morning and after a few basic checks and a top-up of oil, away we went towards Ipswich to meet our friends Nath and Abbie in their T4.
Here was the day’s first drama, when a minor leak whilst filling up with fuel threatened to stop us in our tracks before we really got going. Once we stopped panicking and with the problem sorted, we hit the road towards the show, via a ‘quick’ stop off at a breakers yard near Chelmsford to get a part (with the fun and games which followed, I can’t even remember what the part was!) for Abbie’s MK2 Golf. Our latest readers rides comes from David. The owner of a beautiful VW T2.
Make/Model: VW T2a, Bay Window
Year: February 1970
Colour: Red/White
Engine: 1600cc, (still leaded) petrol
Conversion: Devon Camper
Additional Details: Almost as original, i.e. drum brakes, original interior, original engine, ‘original’ oil stains on the drive.
About the Van:
“I bought the van as an 18 year old in 2005, having finished school and started working for a year to fund a Europe trip. It’s a familiar story to begin with; young man buys old VW, gets hooked, becomes
addicted to ‘the scene’, spends unlimited time learning about mechanical engineering, original interior fittings, gritty little details etc, works like a blue-arsed fly to afford chassis welding and aesthetic touches. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, after months and months of deliberation we have finally made a decision and gone for a VW T5.
The van is a 2007 T5 Kombi 2.5TDi. It is currently a Kombi so has removable seats in the back. It is the 4Motion version with 140bhp so is fairly nippy and great on the Motorway.
The van has leather seats throughout (which I will be selling shortly if anyone is interested) and is fitted with the electric pack (mirrors and windows) and has VW alloys.
So, what’s the plan? The van will shortly be going in to be converted to a camper (without a pop roof initially but that will be added later on) and then I am planning on getting some Carravelle bumpers colour coded and fitter along with colour coding the mirrors.

This weeks readers rides comes from Laura Anne who is sharing her 1978 Westy with us.
Laura purchased her van in February this year and with her boyfriend Trey they’ve just finished a complete resoration on the van. As you can see from the initial images the van wasn’t much of a looker.
“The car is in good condition, some rust here & there, nothing too major. There’s a large dent just under the left head light which we are preparing to fill with body filler. The car came with an extra sliding door that has little rust damage, and a plethora of other spare & original parts. The PO (previous owner) had done a lot of the dirty work already. He completely gutted the interior and took the old Formica off the storage compartments. He replaced the front beam, shocks, brakes, did some body work, cleaned the pop top. The only thing missing from the bus is the canvas tent-like material that goes in the pop top. But it did come with the AWESOME tent that attaches to the outside of the sliding door. Very awesome!” Read the rest of this entry »

This weeks readers rides come from Martin, who’s sharing with us his 1989 VW T25 - Boris.
Model: T25
Year: 1989
Colour: Off white, creamy colour
Engine: 1900cc petrol 4 speed
Camper conversion: Holdsworth 2 berth
We had been thinking about buying a VW camper and decided to go to Vanfest for the day back in 2006. We had approached my bank to see if they would loan us £5,000 which they agreed to, so off we went to Vanfest on the Saturday with the intention of buying a van. We had a good look around and then went to the sales area. We saw some really nice vans but were out of our price range and we also saw some very rough ones that would have needed lots spending on.

Mia is a 22 year old model who has recently become the owner of her 1978 VW Bay Window Bus.
Mia is planning to travel the US in her van with her dog Krueger for company volunteering for various wildlife organisations as she goes (sounds great doesn’t it??)! However Mia does have issues with her not quite road worthy vessel: “The fuel pump is a bit busted, if it’s been sitting, I can stick some gas in the carb and after some coaxing, the bus will start up. My dad’s a mechanic so I’m not too worried about the mechanical jazz - but I am curious about swapping in a biodeisel or just a regular tdi engine.” Well folks any thoughts on swapping a biodesisel or tdi engine?

This weeks Readers Rides comes from Phil Clayton-Smith, who owns Noo noo a beautiful 1976 Bay Window pop top campervan.
Noo noo was first registered in March 1st 1976, with a 1.6cc air cooled engined, the body was a sage green. We decided to buy the bus as a first bus, thinking that a splitty is a bit too expensive for a starter project. The interior was far from perfect but the bus was run-able and decided that the van was perfect as we weren’t too sure what we wanted our inside to look like and this way we had a good engine and body and could put our own stamp on the interior.
We had a 160 mile trip home when we first picked up the van and I was wondering if it would even make it! We stopped for petrol and found the drivers seat had a broken spring which ripped my back pocket open! “This is going to be expensive!” I thought.

This is the first of many posts in which we follow Ben Woodwall and his family as they search for their dream camper van. We will follow Ben through the journey leading to their final buying decision and why. I’ll let ben explain a little more…
Everyone says that they want to own a VW Campervan at some point in their lives don’t they?
The feeling of freedom and the freespirited lifestyle associated with an ageing tin box that will take you and your family and friends to the coast for a few days of carefree abandon and fun is right up there on everyones wish list. So what does it take to go from daydreaming to reality?

I’d like to welcome Paul Williams and his very cool looking 48 year old Samba to readers rides.
My name is Paul Williams I am a 40 year old living in Macclesfield, Cheshire. I have been into VW’s for the last 7 years and in that time have owned 1 bay window and 2 splitscreens. I have worked on each one in my spare time fitting interiors and selling them on at a small profit. This has allowed me to work my way up to the model I have always wanted, a 1962 23 window splitscreen samba. I have recently become the owner of my RHD samba, which has been imported from Indonesia. I am currently replacing the brakes and steering components ready for its MOT and UK registration.
